So I’m throwing it back to summer again and reminiscing on my weekend away in Torquay, Devon. We actually went down at the beginning of August to celebrate my birthday and to spend time with family I’ve got down there. Despite the rain (typical!), we had a really lovely weekend and stayed in a fantastic bed and breakfast, so I thought I would share my next travel post!
I have been to Devon before but it was when I was super little so I didn’t really remember it, so going down this time was like visiting a whole new place. On first look it was very quaint with lots of hills and old looking buildings. The sea was also pretty close as there are lots of different beaches and bays.
We stayed down in Devon for 4 days and 3 nights and were lucky enough to stay in an amazing bed and breakfast called Carlton Court. The boutique B&B was rated 5 star and I could definitely see why. Even before we arrived, the owners couldn’t do enough for us! They rang us to ask about my Partners nut allergy and made sure that while we were there eating was as stress free as possible… not a nut in sight!
When we arrived we were greeted by the lovely owners who helped carry our bags in and then showed us to our lovely room (back to that later!). We were then invited downstairs to enjoy a complimentary Devon cream tea. Not only did we have tea and coffee, but Terry the owner had whipped up some fresh scones complete with an array of homemade jams. It was delicious and the perfect way to unwind after a long car journey.
Now onto our amazing bedroom which was actually a suite. We walked in and were greeted with a huge bed in the middle of a room that had a beautiful bay window overlooking the Devon seaside in the distance. Along with this there was also a lovely bathroom and an extra lounge space complete with armchairs, a mini fridge and home made fudge… result!
The room was so comfortable and perfect for our mini break away. It even had wifi so on those cosy rainy evenings we could snuggle down and watch a film. Yes it did rain down in the English Riviera!
Every morning we were able to enjoy a cooked breakfast if we wanted or an array of other treats, which was just amazing. The owners provided all the breakfast bits you could ever wish for. Fresh bread was provided for toast, again with an array of jams, cereal, yogurt, fruit and pastries (if you requested those the night before so they could be prepared fresh!). It was like having a feast at 9am and I have to say I was all for it.
Additionally, the B&B also had a mini bar which you could help yourself to day or night that would then be charged to your room when you left. To top of this 5* B&B they also had a beautiful garden you could sit and enjoy with a huge variety of plants, flowers and places to sit.
Although we loved the B&B we did venture out to explore Devon in some of our free time. It was a fairly short walk from our B&B down to the sea front and with no real agenda prepared we wandered around freely.
I love the beach so when we hit the sea front we took a few moments to take in the views before heading along the front for a walk. We ambled along taking in the views and decided to walk along the pier. Unbeknownst to us the pier didn’t join up so we got over half way round and had to turn around and come back!
We spent the day exploring and headed to the local sea life zoo, crime museum and then went for a milkshake in one of the historic buildings cafes.
It was pretty rainy when we were down in Devon so on our free evening we decided to spend it back at the B&B with a takeaway. We tried our first Papa Johns and we are hooked! How had I never tried it before? It’s the best pizza take away by far!
On our last day we only really had the morning but we wanted to see what type of tourist attractions Devon had to offer. We decided to head to Kents Caverns as it looked quite cool. As it was the summer holiday’s we headed there for when it opened to beat the rush.
We were pleasantly surprised and the caves were actually really cool and because we had got there so early we were able to really experience all the attraction had to offer. The caves were so big and we had a really great tour guide who explained all the history. Also around the caves are some really great walks, where you can explore the forest, hills and hidden gems of the Devon countryside.
As we didn’t have much time we explored one of the shorter walks but had lots of fun exploring some of the forest which then lead us to the top of a hill which had amazing views and some pretty beautiful houses! It really was a lovely morning!
And just like that we were at the end of our trip. It was lovely to have a long weekend down in Devon and I’m sure i’ll be back again. I would love to visit some of the neighbouring towns to Devon as I heard some really great things. If you know any lovely places to visit around that area I would love to know!
